Wastewater
Vágur Municipality has developed a plan to meet the requirements of the wastewater regulation. The plan is based on Regulation No. 111 from September 7, 2009, concerning wastewater, and has been approved by the Environmental Agency.
The requirements for the wastewater plan include:
- All houses must have a septic tank.
- All wastewater from septic tanks must be discharged into flowing seawater.
- All rainwater must be collected in separate pipes and discharged into the fjord or into rivers and lakes.
- Do not pour acid, chlorine, or other chemicals into the tanks, either from sinks or flushed down the toilet. Such substances hinder decomposition and pollute the ocean.
- Do not let water from sinks and other sources run unnecessarily. The more water that flows into the tanks, the less effective they are at cleaning.
- Do not flush items such as diapers, wet wipes, cotton swabs, cigarette butts, or medications down the toilet.
Septic Tanks
The Environmental Agency has issued guidelines regarding the requirements for septic tanks in the Faroe Islands.
The guidelines set out recommended requirements to ensure that future septic tanks are easy to empty and maintain. For example, the guidelines specify that all new tanks must have T-pipes in the outlet and that cleaning pipes must be installed on both sides of the tank. Another new requirement is that a minimum standard has been set for how effectively a tank must clean.
The guidelines are also intended to prevent the sale of septic tanks in the Faroe Islands that do not function adequately.
