As a resident in Vágur, you will have the choice to choose one of the general practitioners serving at the Medical Center (Heilsumiðstøðin).

General practioner

The general practitioner is your first contact if you have any medical-related questions or conditions. The general practitioner will refer you to a specialized doctor or the appropriate hospital if the medical condition needs further specialized attention.

Consultation is weekdays between 9.00 and 16.00, and scheduling can be made online here or by calling (+298) 66 30 00.

Healt insurance

The Faroe Islands work to ensure that all citizens and residents receive free healthcare services. If you are visiting short-term, as a Nordic and Great Britain citizen, you have full access to the healthcare system, if you become ill or injured during your stay. Citizens of other countries must have health insurance, while you are visiting here short-term. 

If you have a Faroese ID number (P-tal), you are already part of the Faroese National Health Insurance, for which you are entitled to general and specialized medical treatment. You will also receive financial supplements for medicine, dental treatment, and other specialized treatments.

Please note that certain specialized treatments are not completely free. This also applies to dental treatments.

If you are pregnant, you have the right to free childbirth assistance irrespective of your nationality.

The Hospital

Suðuroyar Sjúkrahús, the island's hospital, is one of three hospitals in the Faroe Islands. Suðuroyar Sjúkrahús is located at Tvøroyri. Suðuroyar sjúkrahús provides emergency, medical and surgical treatments, and has 22 bed spaces.
