Funeral

When a citizen passes away, there are many practical tasks that need to be handled. Below is a brief guide for relatives.

  • Contact a priest or someone in your congregation regarding the departure from the chapel and the funeral service. Discuss the speech and hymns with the priest or someone from the congregation.
  • Contact the gravedigger as soon as possible. Remember to provide the dimensions of the coffin. The municipality's gravedigger is Jón Vilhelm, phone 23 93 73 (or phone 21 34 09).
  • Arrange for a hearse to transport from the chapel to the funeral service. The municipality covers the cost of the hearse. Ása Oddbjørg Midjord drives the hearse and can be reached at phone 57 99 26.

Cemeteries

In Vágur Municipality, there are two cemeteries. The old cemetery is at Kirkjuklettur, and the new cemetery is at Líðin. The staff of Vágur Municipality oversees the maintenance of the cemeteries.

Generally, it is the responsibility of the next of kin to maintain a grave. This means that the grave should always be kept in a respectful and tidy condition. In special cases, the next of kin can apply to Vágur Municipality to maintain the grave for a specified fee.
